We provide 4WD Training Recover 4WD Vehicles as an advanced 4WD training course. Focused on the skills needed to actually recover a 4WD vehicle in difficult terrain, 4WD recovery training is important if  you become stuck in your vehicle while in a remote or challenging location.  It is a very hands-on and important safety course if you need to drive to, in or from remote areas including off-road situations.  As with all our safety driving courses, we contextualise the course for those working where this course will be most relevant because your working environment will have compliance and WHS protocols you need to consider.

Our trainers have substantial 4×4 driving experience and their skills will help make take your 4WD driving skills to the next level with training that teaches you critical self-help skills with 4WD recovery – making this training a potentially critical component in achieving a safe return home.

During our 4WD Training Recover 4WD Vehicles course you will learn about the different considerations including environments like sand or mud, different recovery equipment and methods like winches and kinetic ropes. The practical course aspects focus on using different recovery equipment and undertake vehicle recoveries in different settings reflecting working conditions as much as possible. During the course you will also cover communications and other safety information so you can approach 4WD recovery in compliance with any workplace procedures, state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation or standards. The course is structured around the following aspects:

  • 4WD Weight and loads during a recovery
  • Planning recovery
  • Perform kinetic rope or strap recovery
  • Perform winch recovery
  • Understand other 4WD recovery tools and equipment
  • Maintain vehicle recovery equipment
The 4WD Training Recover a 4WD Vehicle course includes:
Find out how much weight your four wheel drive vehicle can carry and calculate how heavy the load will be during recovery, using a recognised formula.
  • Check the labels on the recovery gear to make sure they’re rated for the amount of weight involved in the recovery process.
  • Identify the spots on the vehicle where it’s safe to attach recovery gear, and make sure those spots are rated for the weight of the load.
  • Choose the appropriate equipment for the recovery process based on the vehicle’s carrying capacity, the estimated weight of the load, and the weight rating of the equipment.
  • Make sure the recovery equipment is in good working order and ready to be used for the recovery process.
  • Determine serviceability of recovery equipment required for task
Planning recovery
  • Follow safety procedures and use appropriate safety gear for the recovery process.
  • Identify any potential risks or hazards during the recovery process and take steps to reduce or eliminate them including routes for recovery
  • Follow procedures to protect the environment during the recovery process.
  • Understand the rules and regulations in relation to 4WD opeṟations
  • Know what to do in case of an emergency during the recovery process.
  • Check the recovery site for potential obstacles or hazards and establish a safe area for the recovery process.
  • Inform relevant people about the location of the vehicle to be recovered and the plan for the recovery process.
Perform kinetic rope or strap recovery
  • Communicating with the right people during the 4WD recovery process.
  • Determine when to begin and end the recovery process and best approach to take.
  • Place the kinetic rope or strap out in the right position before starting the recovery process.
  • Connect the kinetic rope or strap to an approved and appropriately rated recovery point or device on the 4WD vehicle.
  • Demonstrate how to connect two kinetic ropes or straps together if needed.
  • Identify the right place to put dampeners on the kinetic rope or strap.
  • Do the actual recovery process of the 4WD safely using the kinetic rope or strap.
Perform winch recovery
  • Maintaining communications with the right people during the recovery process.
  • Determine when and how to begin and end the 4WD recovery process.
  • Place all the necessary equipment in the right positions in relation to the 4WD vehicle to be recovered before starting the recovery process, including the dampeners.
  • Use the winch to recover the 4WD vehicle using a single line pull.
  • Use the winch to recover the 4WD vehicle using a double line pull with either a snatch block or pulley ring.
  • Use the winch to recover the vehicle using a change of direction pull, using a snatch block or pulley ring.
Understand other 4WD recovery tools and equipment
  • Spades and traction boards for vehicle recovery
Maintain vehicle recovery equipment
  • Clean and perform operator maintenance. Check on equipment serviceability for next use and appropriately store recovery equipment 
  • Record equipment maintenance according to workplace procedures

If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a certificate which indicates the Statement of Attainments as recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This  nationally recognised Statement is issued by us, Harness Energy (RTO 40521).

The ‘Statement of attainment’ is for the Nationally Accredited Units of Competency:

The Certificate is usually needed as evidence for your employer for safety and compliance requirements.

Course Requirements

You must have a valid drivers Licence(or P Licence) and 4WD driving experience. All transport and loading equipment is provided. Wear suitable PPE,, bring water, sunscreen and outdoor protection. Jacks, Kinetic ropes and Winches are often used for 4WD vehicle recovery. Various types exist for example,Hand winches, electric winches and power take-off winch options. Other equipment includes ramps and spades. Various methods are used for the different types of equipment depending on the circumstances. Our Harness course helps you understand how to decide on the right approach. During the practical part of the course you practise, participate and observe actual recoveries of vehicles from set up through to completion.
